Costanoa.

Description

Costanoa scouting mission - narrated by Edmundo

Surrounded by endless acres of undisturbed wilderness, rolling coastal hills, and secluded beaches, Costanoa invites you to explore the extraordinary beauty of California's scenic coast and experience nature in its purest form. Connected to four state parks, 30,000 acres of hiking trails and a vibrant wildlife reserve, Costanoa offers the unique opportunity to experience outdoor living in comfortable, stylish surroundings.

Located just one hour south of San Francisco on the eastside of historic Highway 1, our lodge and camp overlook a spectacular stretch of rugged bluffs and secluded panoramic beaches. Just moments to the south lies Año Nuevo, the nation's largest Elephant Seal rookery, to the east stand the majestic redwoods of Big Basin State Park, and to the north the lighthouse at Pigeon Point towers gracefully over fields of pumpkins, artichokes and wild berries.

Costanoa lies at the center of one of the most ruggedly beautiful and spacious stretches of California's coast. Here you'll find no boundary between nature and the Costanoa base camp. The local wildlife, including many rare and endangered species, vastly outnumbers humans. The nearby reserve of Año Nuevo remains as pristine as it was around New Year's Day in 1603, when Spanish maritime explorer Sebastian Vizcaino identified the coastal feature and diarist Father Antonio de la Ascension called it "Punta de Año Nuevo" (Point of New Year).

Costanoa enjoys an unusually temperate climate, nestled in the middle of a "banana belt" between Año Nuevo and Pigeon Point Lighthouse. Long-time residents and generations of farmers say that they enjoy 30 to 40 more days of sunshine per year here than at points north and south. With the ocean and air at about the same temperature year-round, flora and fauna thrive in the area. Nearly 400 years ago, Sebastian Vizcaino described this part of the coast as "swarming with wild, large sea beasts," including otters, seals and whales. On land, his expedition found an abundance of deer, foxes, bobcats and grizzly bears. Except for the grizzlies, descendants of these ancient natives still live near Costanoa. It is a tribute to this robust ecosystem, and to a concerted effort at nature conservation, that the elephant seal and gray whale populations remain at levels nearly that of 200 years ago.

Discover the local residents-whales, elephant seals, etc.-as you set out on dramatic hiking and biking excursions, explore the local tide pools and coastal dunes, take advantage of on-site horseback riding, kayaking, windsurfing and much more. So pack your hiking boots and an appetite for the outdoors, and prepare to encounter nature in a wonderful new way.

Located along the pristine coast of California's scenic Highway 1. Centrally located near San Francisco (55 miles), Santa Cruz (25 miles), San Jose (45 miles), and Half Moon Bay (25 miles).
